77彩票网appFollowing voter approval of an expansive bond package in November, the city of Friendswood plans to spend much of this year building partnerships and completing timelines for projects to be funded through the bond money, which will include drainage work, a new fire station and facility upgrades.

“Staff continues to work with local, state, and federal agencies on regional flood mitigation projects, and after the first of the year, staff will present council with a bond implementation proposal identifying a schedule for how best to tackle the projects approved while minimizing the impact to the tax rate,” City Manager Morad Kabiri said.

77彩票网appThe, and among items approved was a $41 million drainage improvement package, a $2 million package to expand and improve the city’s public works facility, a $9.1 million project for public safety building upgrades and a new fire station. Voters rejected other propositions that would have funded a new community center and make parks and road improvements.

The flood mitigation project was the largest item in the bond and focuses on drainage improvements along Clear Creek is expected to be carried out over more than a decade.

77彩票网appMorad said that dialogue with the city’s police and fire departments has begun on the expansion to the city’s public safety building off Blackhawk Boulevard, as well as replacement of Fire Station No. 2 and training field upgrades.

The existing public safety building on Whitaker Drive houses the police department, fire marshal’s office, office of emergency management and municipal court while the fire station is an outdated metal structure.

77彩票网appThe timing of some of the projects, particularly flood mitigation project and the public works facility, said Kabiri, will depend on those partnerships with outside agencies.

If all propositions had passed in the $76.7 million package presented to voters, Kabiri had said the city’s tax rate of 53.24 cents per $100 home valuation would have risen incrementally over several years by a maximum of about 10 cents.

77彩票网appHe said any effect on the tax rate from bonds sold through the three propositions that were approved will depend upon the timing of when they were issued.

The city is also looking to boost its economic base with a flurry of new retail and other business anticipated for 2020 and continues to look at projects that revitalize downtown, such as more commercial development in downtown, Industry Park, and Virgata Commons.

77彩票网app“New restaurants and retail provide new shopping and dining opportunities for residents and additional property and sales tax revenue to the city,” said Karen Capps, the city’s economic coordinator. “This works toward achieving a more diversified tax base. New downtown developments work toward revitalizing the downtown area into a mixed-use, pedestrian-oriented environment that offers employment, shopping, and dining destinations.”
