Keep Friendswood Beautiful has a busy start to the year with an annual tree giveaway 77彩票网appand efforts to secure a state grant for beautifucation efforts for the city.

On Jan. 18, residents wanting to get their hands on free greenery are encouraged to line up early at City Hall, 910 S. Friendswood Drive to snag a free tree.

Twice the number of trees available this year

“They go fast,” advised Kim Ramirez, who is assistant director for the Friendswood Parks and Recreation Department as well as the KFB coordinator. “We usually have around 100 show up since we give away 100 trees and we sometimes have to turn away a handful of people, but this year we will have 200 trees; so we’re expecting it to be big.”

77彩票网appThe trees are distributed in 15-gallon buckets easy for planting and are varieties that grow well in the area, such as pecan and oak.

77彩票网appA longtime city initiative, the tree giveaway is made possible each year by an anonymous donor and is only open to those who live in the city. To prove residency, people should bring a driver’s license or anything that shows their address and name.

“The Tree Giveaway program has been in existence for many years. Prior to KFB, the program was supported by its predecessor, the Community Appearance Board,” said Friendswood Mayor Pro Tem Sally Branson, also a former liason to the beautification group. “I remember my parents’ involvement with CAB through my children. Together they planted some seedlings that are now beautiful pecan trees in front of their former home on Evergreen.”

Like Ramirez, she urged people to come show early to the 8 a.m. event.

“The trees are usually gone in less than 15 minutes,” Branson said.

77彩票网appLast year the city began tracking how many trees were given away, something the mayor pro tem said she wished it had started doing sooner.

“If we’d kept track since the beginning, it would surely be mind boggling the positive impact this program has had on beautifying our community,” she said.

77彩票网appBranson encouraged everyone to take a few minutes and fill out the survey.

“The more people that respond the more impressive it looks on the grant application,” she said, adding already more than 100 people had taken part..
