The Cove on Hamblen brings new beer, wine options to Kingwood
Shawn Geiser and Jeff Rielag opened the bar they thought their hometown neighborhood Kingwood was missing. The Kingwood High School graduates opened The Cove on Hamblen this fall at 1101 Hamblen Road, Kingwood.
The Cove, which opened in October, has a dog-friendly patio and hopes to eventually offer food as well. For now, they can only offer popcorn from their machine as a snack, but they serve 30 beers on tap and 20 different wines.
Once inside, the charm of a rustic, neighborhood taproom welcomes visitors who have the option of sitting at the bar to talk with the owners or sitting at tables throughout the room. Geiser said they are working to be a community-oriented business that highlights their history in Kingwood. The walls of the bar room are covered with photos of fellow classmates from KHS in 1985.
“Whether it was back in high school or just after high school, the photos represent just a bunch of our friends,” Geiser said. “(We’re) just looking to add on as we continue to go, and more people come in and want to add to the collection.”
With more than 50 beer and wine options, Geiser said The Cove has one of the best selections in the Lake Houston area. The beer selection includes several local craft beer options as well, he said.
“We’ve got a pretty good selection of beer and wine with which we’re continuing to build on,” Geiser said. “We’re doing things that not everyone else around here is doing.”
General manager Daniel Parks met Geiser during their time in Dallas, where Geiser spent three years working for Stone Brewing Company to sell beer in Texas and Lousiana.
Parks had a long path on the road of the food and beverage industry, working from coast to coast until he landed in Kingwood. On the way, he gained knowledge of the beverage industry and brought it back to The Cove.
Parks said The Cove offers quality and care, something he said was lacking in the area. He said many of the wines can only be bought at their location and the team works closely with their purveyors to bring high-quality wine with a great variety.

“It’s just a quiet, friendly neighborhood place to get together,” Parks said.
One of Geiser’s favorite things is to talk to people who are new to craft beer. He said he offers them suggestions based on their preferences.
