Mayor Turner nominates Council Member Dave Martin as Mayor Pro-Tem
77彩票网appMayor Sylvester Turner said he will nominate District E Council Member Dave Martin to serve as Mayor Pro-Tem. District E includes Kingwood, Clear Lake, Summerwood and portions of Huffman.
Turner also announced his support for District K Council Member Martha Castex-Tatum to serve as the Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, according to a press release from the City of Houston. The Houston City Council will vote on the Mayor Pro -Tem and Vice Mayor Pro-Tem on Thursday, Jan. 2 at the swearing-in ceremony held at Wortham Theater. The mayor, city controller and city council members will be sworn-in at 9:30 a.m. and the council will convene for a special meeting at 11 a.m. to vote on the Mayor Pro-Tem and Vice Mayor Pro-Tem nominations, according to the press release.
77彩票网appMartin would serve as mayor when Turner is unavailable if he becomes Mayor Pro-Tem. He has served the city of Houston in the roles of Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs, Chair of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Subcommittee on Debt Financing and Pensions, and a member of Economic Development, Ethics, Elections and Council Governance and Transportation, Technology and Infrastructure.
“Both council members are exceptional leaders and have been effective advocates for their respective council districts,” Turner said in a press release. “I fully expect Council Members Martin and Castex-Tatum to continue to demonstrate their commitment to serving all citizens of Houston over the next four years.”
In the Kingwood area, Martin has worked to create flood mitigation and prevention efforts in the community, including pushing for the Lake Houston Flood Gates, advocating to file a new request to FEMA by the city of Houston to make a secondary continuation of the San Jacinto mouth bar dredging project77彩票网app, filing a cease and desist letter to Perry Homes after the neighborhood of Elm Grove flooded during the May floods and Tropical Storm Imelda, and requesting Houston Public Works to examine the drainage systems throughout Kingwood neighborhoods, among other efforts.
77彩票网app“Councilman Martin’s relationships on the state and federal level will be helpful as Houston fights for flood mitigation, housing recovery and other projects to keep our city strong and resilient,” Turner said.
The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Elected Officials Reception on Dec. 13 honored both Martin and Texas Representative for District 127 Dan Huberty with The Spirit of Commerce Awards. Turner said he expects Martin to be a strong advocate for flood mitigation projects in Kingwood.
“We still have a lot of work to do, like in this area and other parts of the city as well,” Turner said. “... It’s an ongoing process and I look forward to continuing to work with them and others to make sure that we’re building a city and a community that’s stronger, more resilient and more sustainable.”
