Black History Month
Continuing its tradition of celebrating culture and diversity in the community, Missouri City will host its Sixth Annual Black History Month Celebrations. Free festivities will begin on Jan. 31 with a Black History Month Kickoff at the City Hall Complex, 1522 Texas Pkwy., from 5 to 9:30 p.m. Guests will enjoy live musical performances by Jazz Great Dean James, Regional Jazz Saxophonist Theresa Grayson and Zydeco Legend Keith Frank. Fort Bend Cares
77彩票网appAn evening of Latin sights, sounds and tastes awaits guests at Fort Bend Cares’ “Road Trip to South America” on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 6:30 pm at Fluor. The evening includes food from a dozen popular restaurants, roaming entertainment, colorful costumes, musical entertainment by DJ Craig and the Arthur Murray Dance Studio, a raffle and special auction items. The 15th Annual Road Trip will raise funds to support non-profit organizations through grants that improve the lives of disadvantaged children in the county. World Cancer Day
Join the American Cancer Society for a World Cancer Day Health Fair and celebration on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 1-7 p.m. at Sugar Land Town Square. Admission to the family-friendly event is free. The Sugar Land Heritage Foundation conducts a historic walking tour of Old Sugar Land on the second Saturday of each month starting at the museum at 198 Kempner St. at 10 a.m. The walk lasts approximately 90 minutes and covers about 1½ miles. History of Black Cowboys
Travel back in time to the American western frontier days when Fort Bend County Libraries presents “The Black Cowboy: A Historical Perspective” on Tuesday, Feb. 11, from 7-8 p.m. at George Memorial Library, 1001 Golfview in Richmond. Larry Callies, founder of The Black Cowboy Museum in Rosenberg, will bring the Old West to life, helping the audience better understand the western experience and the rich legacy of the black cowboy. Callies will talk about the history of black cowboys, from 1820 to the 1950s. Originally from El Campo, Callies is a former rodeo rider, country-music singer, and postman. Greater Houston Train Show
The Stafford Centre, 10505 Cash Road, Stafford, will host the Greater Houston Train Show on Feb. 13-15, an annual celebration of model railroading by the San Jacinto Model Railroad Club, with the 2020 Lone Star Region NMRA Convention.The train show will be open Feb. 15 from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults and $1 for children ages 12 to 18. The program will also feature the Second Annual Youth Poetry Slam with spoken word performances by students from across the region that will be judged and moderated by Andre “Self the Poet” Burrell, a nationally ranked poet whose style is equal parts intelligent, captivating and profound.
